First Trip to Mainland China–Shanghai November 2013

First Trip to Mainland China–Shanghai November 2013

Last fall, Josh and I both started feeling like we needed to go to China–we felt drawn there. When we first moved to Hong Kong, we weren’t sure if the daughter we would adopt was in HK, China, or elsewhere in Asia. But we started feeling like she is in China. Josh had an opportunity to attend a convention in Shanghai in November, so we jumped on it and took the trip. It was a fun family adventure. Josh had to work a lot of the time,...

September and October, 2013

Here are some highlights from September and October. Magdalena started School (Click on a photo to see the full image.) Magdalena started K3–the 3rd year of kindergarten (although for her it was her first year)–at a local Chinese school. The instruction is completely in Cantonese, except for occasional English and Mandarin classes. There are several other expat (non-Chinese) kids in her class, which made the transition a little...

July and August, 2013

Wow! A lot has happened here in HK since I last posted in June. As a result of lots of blessings and help from friends, we found a house, moved in, and have been settling in. We live in Mui Wo, on South Lantau Island in Hong Kong. Here are some photos from the last few months. (Note: The photos you see below are just “thumbnails” so they’re cropped. If you click on a photo, you can see the whole photo.)   VICTORIA PEAK...

Our first outing to a HK Beach (and a shark)

Today the kids and I went with a friend to lower Cheung Sha beach. Several people have told me this one of the cleanest beaches around. Holy moly. When we arrived, the beach was covered in trash. There were staff there with rakes and dustpans cleaning it up, but it was quite¬†disgusting–see the first couple pictures below. ¬†(My friend who has been there several times before, said she’d never seen it that way.) We decided to brave it...

Central with the Kids

Today Josh had a meeting on HK Island, so the kids and I decided to ride the ferry over with him and do some shopping. Thanks to Amy and Sunnee showing me around a few days ago, I was able to get around and find where I wanted to go. We went to Li Yuen Street (East and West, aka “The Lanes”), H&M, and we ventured up to the Mid Levels. From Central to the Mid Levels was 14 escalators up, with some walking in between. The...

Mui Wo & HK Temple

On Tuesday, we headed to Mui Wo (where we will live as soon as we can find a place to rent there) to visit the kindergarten Magdalena will attend in the fall. It was raining when we set out, so Magdalena donned her rain boots and we brought along our umbrellas (we have 3–2 that Magdalena’s birth grandparents gave Magdalena and James a few months back, and one that a nice Chinese lady gave us in Central on Monday. We were walking in...
